Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) members Selçuklu Municipality and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Girne Municipality signed a sister city protocol with a ceremony held in Girne on 6 December 2022.

Selçuklu Mayor Ahmet Pekyatırmacı, Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü, Turkey – TRNC Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group President and Konya Parliamentarian Orhan Erdem, local officials, council members and guests attended the signing ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü stated that the transfer of knowledge and experience is of great importance in inter-municipal relations, and our relations with Turkish municipalities have started to reach a very high level in recent years. Within this framework, a number of concrete good works began to be signed. Our aim in this protocol that we will make with Selçuklu Municipality today is to bring together people in two cities, and to share knowledge and experience in one city with another city. Of course, we want to do projects in practice,” he said. Selçuklu Mayor Ahmet Pekyatırmacı also explained that as Selçuklu Municipality, they carry out different works with many municipalities both in Turkey and abroad. Expressing that he is pleased to sign a sister city protocol with Girne Municipality, Pekyatırmacı said, “I think this cooperation is very important in terms of cooperation in both international and different cultural fields. I think that the protocols and cooperation between our municipalities at the point of cooperation between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey will certainly contribute to the work to be done in the coming period. Again, I would like to thank all our members of the assembly, our valuable vice presidents, and our managers, and I wish our protocol to be beneficial.”

After the speeches, the sister city protocol between Girne and Selçuklu Municipality was signed by Pekyatırmacı and Güngördü.

With the protocol, it is aimed to develop mutual cooperation between the two historical cities in areas such as urbanism, culture, communication, industry, trade, economy, science, art, environment, health, sports and tourism.
