Başiskele Municipality, a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Turkish World Municipalities Union (TDBB), donated two garbage trucks to Azez Municipality on 19 May 2026, in cooperation with TDBB, demonstrating an outstanding example of cross-border solidarity.
The delivery, carried out to improve the quality of life in the region and contribute to municipal services, was completed during an official visit to the region by the Mayor of Başiskele, M. Yasin Özlü.
Official Visit to Aleppo Acting Governor Fawaz Hilal
During the visit organized in connection with the donation program, Mayor M. Yasin Özlü and his delegation held a series of official meetings. They met with Acting Governor of Aleppo Fawaz Hilal and his delegation to discuss the current situation of the historic city, urban reconstruction efforts, the restoration of local services, the expansion of areas of cooperation, and future projects.
To commemorate the visit, Mayor Özlü presented Acting Governor Hilal with a specially designed piece of calligraphy artwork featuring the Turkish flag.
“We Will Continue to Strengthen Our Bonds of Brotherhood”
Following the visit and vehicle handover ceremony, Mayor M. Yasin Özlü shared the following statement on social media, emphasizing the historical and cultural significance of the region:
“We are in Aleppo, the ancient center of history, culture, and our shared memory—the jewel of our civilization. We visited Acting Governor Mr. Fawaz Hilal and his delegation and exchanged views on the present and future of this historic city. On the occasion of our visit, we presented our gift of garbage trucks to Azez Municipality as a modest contribution to the revitalization of life in the city and the well-being of the people of Aleppo. In every corner of our cultural and spiritual geography, we will continue to strengthen our bonds of brotherhood and solidarity and to heal wounds together.”
The modern sanitation vehicles donated by Başiskele Municipality will be used to enhance environmental health and municipal cleaning services in Azez. During the handover ceremony, attended by officials from both municipalities, it was emphasized that the donated vehicles would address a critical need and contribute significantly to the well-being of the local population.
