Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) members, Konya Metropolitan Municipality (Turkey) and Samarkand (Uzbekistan) Municipality became sister cities with a ceremony held in Konya on February 10, 2025.

The sister city protocol signing ceremony held in Konya Metropolitan Municipality Taş Bina was attended by Konya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay, Samarkand Mayor Fazlıddin Umarov, Yuksalish Institution President and Member of Parliament of Uzbekistan Bobur Bekmurodov, Uzbekistan Presidential Administration Representative Ravshan Sirozhitdinov, and Deputy for the Protection of the Rights and Legal Interests of Enterprises Subordinate to the President of Uzbekistan Jamşid Urunov and Vice President of Yuksalish Movement Askar Mamatkhanov, Member of Parliament of Uzbekistan Zafar Khudaiberdiev and the mayors of Nevai, Shahrisebz, Fergana and Yangi Namangan and from Uzbekistan.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Altay wished the sister city relationship between Konya and Samarkand to be auspicious and said: “Uzbekistan and Turkey have been two states that have been carrying out very important cultural activities in recent years. We have great cultural relations between our nations based on the past. Today, with this signature, we will document the brotherhood between Konya and Samarkand.”

Reminding that they are working very intensively with Uzbek municipalities in TDBB, Mayor Altay said, “Our relationship between municipalities continues both in cultural activities and educational activities. Hopefully, with this signature, we will both document the brotherhood between Konya and Samarkand and we wish to work more intensively with Uzbekistan Municipalities under the umbrella of Union of Turkish World Municipalities. The mausoleums of important names of our cultural world are in Uzbekistan. The number of people from Konya going to Uzbekistan and Samarkand will increase even more with these brotherhood relations. We also aim to increase trade relations between our cities. It is a great happiness for us to have Samarkand among our sister cities.”

Mayor of Samarkand Fazliddin Umarov also stated that they are very pleased to sign a sister city protocol with Konya. I would like to thank Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) and Uzbekistan Yükseliş Institution for coordinating the sister city relationship process. Noting that the relations between the municipalities of the two states with very strong historical ties will further strengthen, Umarov wished the protocol to be auspicious.

Within the scope of the visit, the delegation from Uzbekistan also examined the projects of Konya’s central districts Selçuklu and Karatay Municipalities in order to share information and experience.
