City of Turkistan of Kazakhstan was selected as “2017 Turkish World Capital of Culture”. At the 34th Term Meeting of the Permanent Council of TURKSOY on 01 December 2016 in Azerbaijan, city of Turkistan of Kazakhstan, also a member of Union of Turkic World Municipalities (TDBB) was selected as “2017 Turkish World Capital of Culture”.

The meeting, which took place in Shaki as the “2016 Turkish World Capital of Culture”, was attended by Ministers of Culture and authorities from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Gagauz Autonomous Region, and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In the meeting Turkey was represented by Deputy Undersecretary of Ministry of Culture and Tourism Nihat Gül.

At the meeting it was decided that city of Turkistan of Kazakhstan would be declared as 2017 Turkish World Capital of Culture. It was approved that the Coordinatorship of 35th Term Meeting of the Permanent Council would be undertaken by Kazakhstan Ministry of Culture and Sports and the meeting would be held at the end of 2017 in Turkistan.

Besides, it was also finalized with the proposal of Azerbaijan Ministry of Culture and Tourism that 2017 would be declared as “Commemoration Year of Molla Panah Vagif” in TURKSOY member countries on the occasion of 300th year of his birth.

Turkistan is the place where Hodja Ahmad Yasawi was born and lived

According to the historical records, the city which was established in 4th century and called as “Yesi” then, is the city where Hodja Ahmad Yasawi was born and lived. Yasawi Tomb, listed as the first historical monument of Kazakhstan in UNESCO World Heritage List and built by Emir Timur in 14th century, is among the gorgeous works of the city. This monument has been renewed with restoration in 1993 by Turkey. The city, also hosting Ahmad Yasawi Kazakh-Turkish University which was laid in 1992, draws attention with its historical texture, modern city life and originality.
