Members of Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) Beylikdüzü Municipality (Istanbul) and Girne Municipality (TRNC) signed Sister City Protocol.

The signing ceremony was attended by Mayor of Beylikdüzü Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of Girne Nidai Güngördü and council members and municipal staff of Beylikdüzü and Girne Municipalities.

In the signing ceremony, Mayor of Beylikdüzü Ekrem İmamoğlu said that as an individual from Kyrenia and also a player in Turkish Society Limasol Sports Club (TOL), it was a pleasure to be sister city with Girne Municipality. İmamoğlu also stated that he loved Kyrenia very much because it was the place where he spent his youth and he mentioned that they would be with Cyprus society in their defense of Cyprus in addition to cultural, artistic and municipal services. İmamoğlu said that a monument of founding president of TRNC Rauf Denktaş is being prepared in Beylikdüzü and the opening ceremony is planned to be made in January 2017. He added that recently Girne Municipality has carried out great projects, which he also followed closely, and indicated that those projects were well-appreciated.

On the other hand, in the signing ceremony, Mayor of Girne Nidai Güngördü said that he was glad to be sister cities with İstanbul Beylikdüzü Municipality whose Mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, played football for some time in Turkish Society Limasol Sports Club (TOL) in the time when he was a student in Kyrenia. Nidai Güngördü underlined the fact that it was very important to be sister cities with Beylikdüzü as one of the developing districts of Istanbul and added that they decided to make cooperation between two municipalities concerning culture, art and municipal services. Güngördü reminded that this year Girne Municipality has also become sister cities with Eskişehir Metropolitan and Niğde Kemerhisar Municipalities and the cooperation between municipalities has many benefits for both parties.
