International conference on “Kaşgarlı Mahmud and his Place in World Civilization”, hosted by Kasım Tınıstan Uulu Işık-Göl State University, in cooperation with the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY) and the Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB), was held on 1 June 2023 in the city of Karakol, Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyz Republic First Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Kayrat Imanaliyev, TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev, Karakol Mayor Chingiz Bakayev, Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) Secretary General Fahri Solak, Gebze Mayor Zinnur Büyükgöz, Uçhisar Mayor Osman Süslü, well-known scientists and guests from Turkey and Kyrgyzstan attended.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, TURKSOY Secretary General Raev emphasized that “more research needs to be done on the life and work of Kashgarli Mahmud, the ancestor of Turkish lexicography, who brought Dîvânu Lugâti’t Türk, which illuminates many subjects of the Turkish language, to all peoples of Turkic origin. He stated that on the occasion of the 950th Anniversary of the Spelling of the Turkish, the commemoration of Kasgarli Mahmud was included in the 2024-2025 UNESCO Anniversaries of Commemoration and Celebration Programs. Many events are planned for this occasion.

Speaking at the conference, the Secretary General of the Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) Fahri Solak also talked about the characteristics and importance of Dîvânu Lugâti’t Türk and gave detailed information about the translation studies in different languages and the thesis, books and articles studies on the subject published in Turkey.

Within the scope of the event, together with the delegation from Turkey, the village of Barskan, where Mahmud of Kashgar was born, was visited. Here, ideas were exchanged on the construction of a statue and museum of Kashgarli Mahmud.
