Local elections were held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Sunday, December 25, 2022.

In the local elections held in the TRNC, the people went to the polls again after four years. The TRNC Supreme Election Board (YSK) reported that 208,236 registered voters in the country cast their votes in 768 ballot boxes to determine 18 mayors, 220 city council members, 240 headmen and 960 members of council of elders. Participation rate in the elections was 68.85 percent.

The “Draft Law on the Unification of Municipalities”, which envisages a decrease in the number of municipalities in the TRNC from 28 to 18, was approved in the Assembly of the Republic on August 25, 2022.

The ruling National Unity Party (UBP), Democrat Party (DP) and YDH (Rebirth Party) coalition entered the election as an alliance, UBP 6, DP 1 and 1 independent candidate they supporte became mayors. While the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), the main opposition party, won 7 mayors, Mehmet Harmancı from the Socialist Democracy Party (TDP), who has been the mayor of the capital Lefkoşa for 2 terms, secured his position.

According to the local election results, the winners of the mayorships are as follows: Değirmenlik-Akıncılar Municipality Ali Karavezirler, Gönyeli-Alayköy Municipality Hüseyin Amcaoğlu, Lefkoşa Municipality Mehmet Harmancı, Beyarmudu Municipality Bülent Bebek, Gazimağusa Municipality Süleyman Uluçay, Geçitkale-Serdarlı Municipality Halil Kasım, Mesarya Municipality Ahmet Latif, Tatlısu Municipality Ahmet Hayri Orçan, Yeniboğaziçi Municipality Katip Demir, Çatalköy-Esentepe Municipality Ceyhun Kırok, Dikmen Municipality Yüksel Çelebi, Girne Municipality Murat Şenkul, Lapta-Alsancak-Çamlıbel Municipality Fırat Ataser, Güzelyurt Municipality Mahmut Özçınar, Erenköy-Karpaz Municipality Hamit Bakırcı, İskele Municipality Hasan Sadıkoğlu, Mehmetçik-Büyükkonuk Municipality Fatma Çimen Tuğlu and Lefke Municipality Aziz Kaya.
