Two houses built in Potocari, Bosnia and Herzegovina within the scope of the “Srebrenica Nursing Home Project” by Konya’s Selçuklu and Karatay Municipalities under the coordination of Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB), were opened with a ceremony held on 28 June 2022.

The opening ceremony of the houses built for the mothers of Bosnian martyrs who were massacred in Srebrenitsa, was attended by mothers of Srebrenitsa, Turkey’s ambassador to Sarajevo Sadık Babür Girgin, Mayor of Selçuklu Ahmet Pekyatırmacı, Mayor of Karatay Hasan Kılca, Mayor of Meram Mustafa Kavuş, PMs of Konya Leyla Şhin Usta and Ahmet Sorgun, Coordinator of EMMAUS Elmedin Skrebo, the representatives of Turkish institutions and other guests. 

In his opening speech, Coordinator of EMMAUS Skrebo thanked Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB), Selçuklu and Karatay Municipalities for their support to the nursing home project.

In his speech at the ceremony, Mayor of Selçuklu Ahmet Pekyatımcı said, “We do not feel ourselves as guests but as our own family here. The mothers here are our mothers, the children here are our children, and the Muslim Bosnians living here are our brothers.”

Stating that the Selçuklu Municipality has been in a sister city relationship with Sarajevo’s Stari Grad Municipality since 2013, Pekyatırmacı noted that they have realized many projects with Stari Grad Municipality and Turkish institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mayor of Karatay Hasan Kılca stated that they saw this project during their previous visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina and that Karatay Municipality undertook the construction of a house, “We signed a sister city protocol with the Municipalities of Novigrad and Teocak, and apart from this, we carry out activities at many points together with the Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB). I see all our mothers here as my own mother and I would like to state that we will never leave them alone.”

After the speeches, the ribbons for the opening of the houses were cut and the houses were toured with the mothers of Srebrenica.
