Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) Administrative Board Member Osmangazi Municipality (Bursa) commemorated Alija Izetbegovic on the 18th anniversary of his decease with an exhibition and panel program held on October 23, 2021.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition, hosted by Mayor of Osmangazi Mustafa Dündar, was attended by Alija’s daughter Lejla Akšamija, as well as AK Party Bursa Deputy Refik Özen, Bosnia and Herzegovina Ankara Ambassador Adis Alagic, Rector of Uludağ University Prof. Dr. Ahmet Saim Kılavuz, Rector of Bursa Technical University Prof. Dr. Arif Karademir, Deputy Governor of Bursa Mustafa Gündoğan, Deputy Mayor of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Murat Demir, academics and guests.
While the ‘Alija Izetbegovic Between East and West Photography Exhibition’ was opened at Panorama 1326 Bursa Conquest Museum, Izetbegovic’s daughter Lejla Akšamija talked about her memories with her father. Noting that her father’s life was a struggle and he worked hard, Lejla Akšamija said, “I would like to thank everyone, especially our Mayor of Osmangazi Mustafa Dündar, who remembers the works and legacy of my father Alija, who shines like a star on the political scene of Europe and the world”.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Mayor of Osmangazi Mustafa Dündar stated that Alija Izetbegovic is a symbolic name and stated that they are proud to commemorate such an important person in Osmangazi. Mayor Dündar pointed out that Alija continued his struggle without forgetting his own nation, religion and culture while going through the grip of communism and added, “Alija emerged victorious from a place where an unprecedented genocide took place in the history of the world, showing a struggle for existence under the conditions of that day. Bosnian youth, along with us, should not forget how this victory was won.”
In the panel organized in cooperation with Uludağ University and chaired by Faculty Member of Theology Prof. Dr. M. Asım Yediyıldız, Professor. Dr. Sanjin Kodric from University of Sarajevo and Dr. Osman Arslan explained in detail the experiences, struggle and life of Izetbegovic, who is a politician and also a writer. The exhibition, which consists of photographs compiled by the Alija Izetbegovic Museum, the life story of the Wise King and important turning points of his life, will remain open at Panorama 1326 Bursa Conquest Museum until 9 November 2021.
