Konya Metropolitan Municipality provided support on landscaping and equipment to its sister city Famagusta for the Varosha region which has been closed for 46 years in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and has started to be opened gradually with the decision.

President of Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) and Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay made examinations in the region with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Environment and Urbanization Murat Kurum on the occasion of the ceremony held on 15 November 2020. During the ceremony Mayor Altay said that, “We have attended to this visit of our President in the Northern Cyprus and we have brought the greetings of the Turkish world and our citizens in Konya to the Cypriots. Konya Metropolitan Municipality and Famagusta Municipality has established a sister city relation. First of all, we have delivered 600 bicycles and installed these in the parks in Varosha for our sister city. Moreover, we have sent a cleaning vehicle for the streets, a garbage collection vehicle and a sprinkler to the Famagusta Municipality as a gift from Konya Metropolitan Municipality”.

Altay also posited that they have been working on the reconstruction of newly opened Varosha region with the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and Mass Housing Administration and he added that, “We have carried out the work cooperatively on the construction of asphalt and the preparation process of the landscaping and the arrangements of the beaches. We have always supported the Northern Cyprus until today, and we will continue to do so”.

Altay expressed that their works and efforts will be continued in the region and he added that: “Due to our sister city relationship with Famagusta Municipality, we will continue to communicate and work cooperatively with Famagusta Municipality from now on. When it comes to briefly explain about Union of Turkish World Municipalities, it is an association with 1,170 member municipalities from 30 different countries all over the world. We have co-chairs in some countries under our Union. In Cyprus, we are working together with the President of the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities under the roof of Union of Turkish World Municipalities. In other words, our knowledge, experience and communication gained in the past will continue to boost in the future. Accordingly, we have participated in the 37th anniversary of the establishment of TRNC and the official parade. Hereby, I wish mercy to all our martyrs who died in the Cyprus. On behalf of Konya Metropolitan Municipality and Union of Turkish World Municipalities, I would like to express that we are ready to carry out all kinds of projects with our brothers in the Northern Cyprus”.
