Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) made an Information and Experience Sharing Program between Turkish and Russian local governers on “Activities of Municipalities to Combat Covid-19 Pandemic” in cooperation with Union of Russian Cities. The program was conducted through video conferencing on 10 July 2020.

The meeting was moderated by TDBB Secretary General Fahri Solak and General Manager of Union of Russian Cities Aleksandra Ignatyevna and attended by President of TDBB and Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay, Mayor of Balıkesir Yücel Yılmaz, Mayor of Şahinbey Mehmet Tahmazoğlu and Mayor of Bağcılar Lokman Çağırıcı from Turkey. The participants of the meeting from Russia were General Manager of Union of Russian Cities Aleksandra V. Ignatyevna, Deputy Mayor of Ufa (Bashkortostan) Salavat Husainov, Head of Department of Strategic Planning of Union of Russian Cities Аleksandr Prilepin, Head of the Committee of Local Authorities of Moscow City Council Аleksandr Kozlov and Head of Department of Foreign Relations of Kazan (Tatarstan) Municipality Ruslan Galiahmetov. Additionally, many local governors were attended to the video conference as listeners.

In the meeting, Uğur İbrahim Altay informed the participants on “Water Management activities of Konya Metropolitan Municipality (Drinking water, Postponing the water bill etc.)”, Mayor of Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Yücel Yılmaz gave information about “Public transportation services, Short and flexible working models”, Mayor of Şahinbey Mehmet Tahmazoğlu briefly explained his municipality’s “Social and Financial Aid Services (Cash aid, Supports of tax, rent, food and hygiene equipment)”, Mayor of Bağcılar Lokman Çağırıcı gave information about “Home Care Services, Vefa Support Team (social help group in a local level), Disinfection activities and Psychological support services”. Moreover, Russian mayors and experts gave information about the activities and measures taken by Russian municipalities to fight against Coronavirus pandemic.

In the meeting, it was emphasized that such meetings should be held more frequently and was stated that it should be worked cooperatively by exchanging ideas and knowledge and sharing the best practices in order to create a healthy and sustainable future.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of developing digital technologies by investing them not only to improve the quality of life in cities, but also to promote a healthy environment in order to share information during the global disasters such as Coronavirus.
