The new building of Kyrenia Municipality, which is a member municipality of Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) from TRNC, was opened with a ceremony on 28 February 2020.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of TRNC Tourism and Environment Ünal Üstel, Minister of National Education and Culture Nazım Çavuşoğlu, Deputy Chairman of the Council Zorlu Töre, Mayor of Güzelyurt and TDBB Administrative Board Member Mahmut Özçınar, Secretary General of Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) Fahri Solak, members of municipal councils and many guests.
Mayor of Kyrenia Nidai Güngördü made the opening speech at the ceremony. Güngördü, during his speech, made a condolences message for Turkish soldiers who martyred in Idlib and also for people who lost their lives during a fire in Nicosia Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu Hospital.
Güngördü also posited that they made a great deal of effort for the construction of this municipality building which was started in April 2014. He also expressed that all the expenses of the construction was covered by the municipality’s own budget.
Güngördü also said that “We have achieved this success thanks to the people of Kyrenia” and also he emphasized that the building was designed by the municipality’s own architects. Güngördü posited that the building is designed as environment-friendly and disabled-friendly and he noted that the building produces its own electricity. Moreover he said that there is a cultural center in the new building with a 400 people capacity and added that “There is even an Orchestra Pit in the building.” Lastly, he posited that there will not be need of a new building for 50 years in the city of Kyrenia and he thanked participants and everyone who contributed to the new building.
Following the opening speeches, the presentation of the certificates of appreciation and the official opening of the new building were made with ribbon cutting. The ceremony was completed after the participants’ tour in the new building.
