President of the Union of Turkish World Municipalities (TDBB) and Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay has been elected as the Co-President of UCLG.
The World Congress of UCLG, the most comprehensive network of local and regional authorities representing 240,000 cities from different regions of the world, was held on 16 November 2019 in Durban, South Africa. Mayor of Konya Metropolitan Municipality Uğur İbrahim Altay who participated in the meeting was among the 6 mayors who were elected as the co-chairman of UCLG among the 12 candidates.
Mayor Ugur Ibrahim Altay, wished for the election to be beneficial to Konya and Turkey, and said “United Cities and Local Governments Organization UCLG, is a large organization where more than 240 thousand municipalities are members and where more than a thousand council members represent the five billion people. A new board of directors was formed in the general assembly of this organization. We are very pleased to be represented here as Konya and Turkey. Turkey’s and Konya’s flag will wave in one more international platform. We will carry out studies on identifying the problems of all local governments in the world and creating new solution proposals during our 3-year duty. May our country and city get better”.
Mayor of Morocco’s Hoceima Elected as UCLG President
In the Congress, the Mayor of Morocco Hoceima was elected as the President of UCLG; together with mayors of Konya, Xian from China, Utrecht from the Netherlands, San Jose from Costa Rica and the Union of South African Municipalities that were elected as UCLG Co-Presidents until 2022.
UCLG, in coordination with the United Nations, carries out activities to ensure that local governments take a more active role in world politics, produce effective solutions for the solution of their problems, share sustainable development goals among local governments and develop local solidarity through experience sharing programs.
