From September 25 to September 28, 2019, the Safranbolu Municipality organized the 20th International Festival of Documentary Films “Golden Saffron” on the theme “Cultural Heritage and its Preservation”, among the supporting organizations, was the Union of Turkic World Municipalities (TDBB). An additional theme for this year was Safran. The winners of the festival were awarded the “20th International Golden Saffron Documentary Film Festival” award at the ceremony held in the city of Safranbolu.

The awarding ceremony of the 20th Golden Saffron Documentary Film Festival, organized by the Safranbolu Municipality, was held in the conference hall of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Tourism of Karabuk University Safranbolu named after Fethi Toker.

1527 films from more than one hundred countries took part in the documentary competition, of which 33 films reached the final. As a result of the jury’s assessment, the documentary “Mason” by Iranian director Mahdi Zamanpore, which describes the life of an old man who made the bread from a stone, was awarded the first prize, the documentary “Changing Cities” of Tevfik Şenol won the second, and the documentary “The Last Tribes” of the director Ebru Çakırkaya took the third place. The famous screenwriter and producer Türker İnanoğlu received the “Lifetime Honorary Award”. Turker Inanoglu could not attend the ceremony due to illness, so on his behalf, the award was handed to Serpil Akıllıoğlu.

Safranbolu Mayor Elif Köse said: “Once the festival is over, we will immediately begin preparations for the next festival. You wıll see that Safranbolu will become the capital of documentaries, the capital of culture and art after the opening of the university’s communications department, film and television department and after the completion of the construction of our cultural center.”

The Concert of Edip Akbayram

At the closing ceremony of the festival singer Edip Akbayram performed a concert. Thousands of people accompanied the songs of the famous artist Edip Akbayram, whose concert was held on Misak-i-Milli Democracy Square. At the end of the concert, Mayor of Safranbolu Elif Köse gave Edip Akbayram a model of one of the city’s houses.
