‘European Youth Winter Olympic Games (EYOF)’ that is organized every two years was held on 10-15 February 2019 in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Olympics were held in cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality of Sarajevo and the municipality of East Sarajevo, located within the borders of Republika Srpska. The previous European Youth Winter Olympic Games took place in Erzurum in 2017. The city of Sarajevo, which hosted the 1984 Winter Olympic Games, by organizing the EYOF 2019 had the opportunity to organize a big international event for the first time in years.
Delegations and athletes from various countries of the world participated in the opening ceremony of the EYOF 2019. The official opening ceremony was attended by the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik, the European Olympic Committee Chairman Janez Kociyancic, Mayor of Sarajevo Metropolitan Municipality Abdulah Skaka and Mayor of Eastern Sarajevo Nenad Vukovic.
900 young athletes from 46 countries participated in EYOF 2019 in 8 different winter games discipline. Among the disciplines were alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, short track speed skating, and snowboarding. By winning the twelve medals, the country that won the most gold medals was Norway. Switzerland was the second with 12 medals, but winning one gold medal less than Norway, the third was France with 11 medals. 35 young athletes from Turkey took part in the competition.
2019 European Youth Winter Olympic Games concluded on 15 February 2019, with the ceremony of handing over the Olympic flag by the President Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik to Finland’s Vuokatti Mayor, whose municipality will host the EYOF in 2021.
