Local elections were held on Sunday, June 24, 2018, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). While in 23 out of the 28 municipalities Mayor didn’t change, in only five municipalities Mayor changed.
In the local elections held in the TRNC, voters went to the polls once again after four years. 191.153 voters voted in 734 polling boxes. The TRNC Higher Election Board (YSK) announced that participation rate was 71.41 percent. Compared to the 2014 elections, the percentage of the voters was 2 percent higher.
Mehmet Harmancı in Lefkoşa, Nidai Güngördü in Girne, Ismail Arter in Famagusta, Aziz Kaya in Lefke, Mahmut Özçınar in Güzelyurt and Hasan Sadıkoğlu in Iskele are re-elected for 4 more years. Among the six provinces, the most contested election was in Güzelyurt. Özçınar won the elections for the sixth time.
In 23 out of the 28 municipalities, Mayor didn’t change
Ahmet Latif in Akdoğan, Hasan Barbaros in Akıncılar, Hulusi Manisoy in Alayköy, Fırat Ataser in Alsancak, İlker Edip in Beyarmudu, Ahmet Sennaroğlu in Büyükkonuk, Mehmet Hulusioğlu in Çatalköy, Yüksel Çelebi in Dikmen, Suphi Coşkun in Dipkarpaz, Cemil Erdoğan at Esentepe, Hasan Öztaş in Geçitkale, Ahmet Benli in Gönyeli, Ali Öncü in İnönü, Cemil Sarıçizmeli in Mehmetçik, Halil Tülücü in Paşaköy, Hayri Orçan in Tatlısu, Mehmet Adahan in Vadili were re-elected to serve for another four years.
Out of the 28 municipality Mayors, only 5 changed
Only 5 out of 28 municipalities in the local elections in the TRNC have changed. Mayors of Yeni Boğaziçi, Değirmenlik, Serdar and Yeni Erenköy municipalities have changed. While independent candidate Mustafa Aktuğ won the election race in Lapta, independent candidate Mustafa Zurnacılar won in Yeni Boğaziçi Municipality. Ali Karavezirler won the race for the position of Mayor of Değirmenlik. Independent candidate Emrah Yeşilırmak was elected as the new Mayor of Erenköy Municipality, while Halil Kasım was elected as the Mayor of Serdarlı Municipality.
